At the time of its establishment, the institution was known as Pachaiyappa\'s Central Institution. At that time, the educational institution was the first Hindu college in Southern India which was not established, run and funded by the British. The Pachaiyappa\'s Central Institution earned the \'college\' status in 1889. Until 1947, however, only Hindu students were admitted at Pachaiyappa\'s College. Pachaiyappa\'s College was the result of the philanthropist spirit of Pachaiyappa Mudaliar who had risen from rags to riches at a young age. Pachaiyappa\'s College is one of the units of the Pachaiyappa\'s Trust Board and strives for the cause of education, particularly for the weak and downtrodden classes. Pachaiyappa\'s College is one of the most prominent colleges under the University of Madras at present. The college has on offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses along with MPhil and PhD programmes in various disciplines of Arts and Science streams. The alumni of Pachaiyappa\'s College have made their mark in all streams of life all over the globe. Pachaiyappa\'s College has a well-stocked library for the perusal of students and faculty members. The general and postgraduate libraries remain open for half-day during May when other sections remain closed. Pachaiyappa\'s College, University of Madras has a separate Department of Physical Education which takes part at the intra-university, inter-university and state level competitions and tournaments for hockey, cricket, football, kabaddi and weightlifting. The students have always won laurels for Pachaiyappa\'s College when it comes to sports. Pachaiyappa\'s College has a well-maintained hostel as well.
